There's no end of Mexican food places in Central Maui, but they either don't serve cervezas, have bad atmosphere, bad service, or just plain have terrible food. While on a recent trip to the Queen Kaahumanu Mall, we decided to try out the new Fernando's location (they are also in the Maui Marketplace's Food Court- so I already new they had great food...) and found a Mexican restaurant that served all of our requirements- and then some!

It's a clean restaurant (down at the end, near Sears, and has served up everything from Italian to Vietnamese since the Arby's shut down) with festive, if typical, Mexican restaurant decor.

After scanning the menu, which is more elaborate than the typical tacos and burritos menu, our excellent server, Tricia, recommended the Molcajete, which is kind of like fajitas, it comes out sizzling on a lava rock, and is served with two kinds of meat (your pick), grilled onions, and surprisingly yummy cactus. Tricia also informed us that it's plenty for two, especially if you get two tortilla orders, and she was correct.

Tricia also talked us in to the fried ice cream, which was probably the best I've ever had.

And of course, we had beer.

But the best part of the story is that our two-year old daughter loved her quesadillas from the kids menu, and sat through an entire dinner.

So, there you have it- great food, cold beers, excellent service, and a happy child = return customers!

While I was stuck in traffic trying to get in to Paia today (at 10:30am?), I contemplated my next blog posting. A thought had occurred to me a while back, about the new proliferation of consignment shops on the island, but the vacation mode of the holidays took over and the thought escaped my mind. Despite having a two-year old in tow, after a quick stop at the post office, I headed up Baldwin Avenue to check out Sassy Seconds, a consignment shop that I had driven by several times, but had never checked out. It turns out I was too late.

The shop was taken over by a new owner, Davida, late last year, and is now called Isle Empress. While there are still a few consignment items available, Davida is hoping turn the shop into a storefront for local artists and designers, including clothing and swimsuit designers, jewelers and photographers. In the mean time, Davida has stocked her store, located on Baldwin Avenue at the Paia Train Depot, near the old sugar mill, with beautiful finds from a recent shopping trip to Asia.

Davida is actively looking for designers to feature in her shop and invites anyone to stop by. In addition to information for this blog posting, I walked out of the shop with an awesome new dress. Now I just need someplace to where it!

And for all you fans of shopping out there on Maui- I've just created a Facebook page - to post tips or inquiries! Click here to join!

It can sometimes be hard to get into the holiday spirit on Maui, with little chance of a white Christmas, sledding, or snuggling up by a fire, but this weekend there are almost too many events to choose from. Here is just a small sampling of events that one can partake in- starting with Santa's schedule-

Santa is scheduled to make an appearance at First Friday in Wailuku, spend Saturday morning making gingerbread cookies with the kids at the Queen Kaahumanu Mall, then he may even make it up to the Christmas event in Makawao on Saturday evening, although i haven't been able to confirm this yet with his elves.

There are several performances that shouldn't be missed, including Annie at the Iao Theatre, The Nutcracker at the MACC, and the Seabury Hall Christmas Show- call this morning if you want tickets!

There are also several craft fairs this Saturday- including the Haleakala Waldorf Faire! What are you up to this weekend?

While most other parts of Maui are growing and changing, it’s always comforting driving up to Makawao, a place where remarkably little has changed in the fifteen years since I graduated from high school there. The most noticeable change is the absence of Kitada’s Saimin shop, which is now- in typical Maui fashion- a yoga studio. Another sad departure is the original Maui Hands, with locations now in Paia, Lahaina and Kaanapali.
But those seeking a nostalgic tour of Makawao will be thrilled that Komoda’s Bakery still sells the world’s best donuts and cream puffs, Casanova still has delicious wood-fired pizza and hopping late-nights, and Polli’s is still a family favorite for Mexican cuisine.
One change for the better is the major renovation of the Rodeo General Store. With the departure of Down to Earth, the natural food store, Rodeo now offers an amazing selection of vegetarian offerings, plus a beautiful deli and sandwich shop.
Besides eating, Makawao is a great place for shopping, with a wide range of boutique and specialty shops. Makawao is known as a paniolo (cowboy) town, and for anyone needing that perfect pair of boots or cowboy hat, it’s sure to be found at either Aloha Cowboy or the Piiholo Ranch Store. My personal favorite shop is Little Tibet, with beautiful, original jewelry, and great prices.
Hot Island Glass offers free entertainment with their glass blowing demonstrations, and Viewpoints Gallery has a frequently rotating selection of works by local artists.
Makawao is also well-known for their holiday festivities, notably- The Fourth of July Parade and Rodeo, and the annual Christmas in Makawao Town. Mark your calendars for the upcoming Christmas event- Saturday, December 5- starting at 11am and culminating in the lighting of the Norfolk Pine at 5:30pm. Ho, Ho Ho!

When we pulled in to Kahana Gateway Shopping Center, for our first visit to the Maui Brewing Co., I wasn't really sure what to expect. A micro-brewery in a strip mall? But once inside the restaurant/brewery, one quickly forgets the location. The interior was apparently recently refurbished, to give it an industrial, yet, fun and lively feel, and even though we were one of two tables at 11am, that feeling was accomplished.

We rarely go out to eat anywhere that requires sit down service, with an almost two-year old, but we figured we'd give it a chance. We quickly ordered the grilled chicken with a side of fruit for the little one, but deciding on a beer, with 13 to choose from, took a little more time. Maui Brewing offers 3 in the stores, which we had tried before, so we decided to be adventurous (and fruity) with the Mana and Mango Wheats.

I had been under the impression, before seeing the menu, that this was a 'burger and pizza' joint, but it offers so much more. I had the beer-battered brie (seriously, how could you resist?) with a carmelized pineapple dip, with the chili appetizer as the main course (definitely filling enough for an entree!) The brie was absolutely amazing and will keep me thinking of excuses to drive over an hour all the way back there. Hubby had the Maui onion soup (also delicious) and the adult mac and cheese, with sausages and truffle oil, which was rich and yummy.

All in all, lunch at Maui Brewing way surpassed our expectations, with a waiter who truly understands customer service (regretfully, i forget his name, but he's the really tall bald guy), delicious beer, incredible, creative food- especially for the kids menu- and a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

After years of Halloween domination, things in Lahaina are fizzling enough that an entire town is now taking over as Maui's Halloween hot-spot. Paia, which claims on its website to be Maui's Coolest Little Town, is hosting a wide range of activities on Saturday, from trick-or-treating, haunted houses, costume contests, a freaky fashion show and DJ dancing. There are activities for kids earlier in the evening, then plenty of options for those without kids, or those lucky enough to find a babysitter, later in the evening. For a full schedule of events, check out their website. The town is also giving back to the community all weekend with a food drive, so don't forget your non-perishable treats, with drop-off locations also posted online.

Paia's merchants have been getting into the Halloween spirit early, with a window decorating contest. The winner was Milagro's Food Co, with a 'Day of the Dead' display. Check out some of my favorites- especially my personal favorite, Tamara Catz, the photo doesn't do this display justice- it's absolutely beautiful in person!

A friend of mine mentioned in passing that they had stumbled upon a special at Buzz's Wharf in Maalaea that sounded like a good deal. With a special event like a birthday and an Aerosmith concert, combined with a babysitter, a dinner out was in the cards.

There are two 'early birds' samplers available at Buzz's Wharf, for diners that can place an order by 6pm, for $25 or $30 for a 4-course meal, depending on the entree you choose. I can't recall each item, but we had the shrimp cocktail, the shrimp bisque (delicious) and the Tahitian Prawns- which tasted like sweet lobster tails! There are two choices for dessert, mac nut tart or ice cream sundae, so we each had one and combined for a pie a la mode, which was the perfect end to the meal. The portions are not huge, although the soup was a decent sized cup and the entree was plenty of food, but we both left feeling stuffed, and thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal, and still had enough money left over to buy a few scrip at the concert.

The reports were that Aerosmith was court-ordered, to not only put on a full show, with all the fancy equipment, but also to 'perform' fully. I was expecting an awesome show, with dramatic lighting, crazy props, and maybe even some pyrotechnics. Quite frankly, I saw a better light show at the Alanis Morrisette Concert in Boston. But that wasn't the kind of show that we were all there to see.
We were treated to a spectacular show put on by arguably the greatest rock band of our time.
We were in the cheap seats, but thanks to two enormous 'jumbo-trons', we were able to see every shake of Steven Tyler's hips, the masterful fingers of Joe Perry on his seemingly endless supply of guitars, and all those other guys that no one knows the name of...
But put on a full show they did. And i hope they come back soon. Now if I can only figure out how to score those front row tickets... those people (according to the jumbo-tron) looked like they were really having fun!

Anyone driving along Baldwin Avenue on Monday might have wondered why a couple dozen men and women in neon green 'safety' vests were seemingly aimlessly wondering up and down the road. For those people, let me explain. (And, the rest of you can keep reading too.)
This was a field trip for the Paia Relief Route Advisory Group (PRAG), a group of concerned citizens, vested businesses and government officials who are trying to come up with a perfect solution to Paia's traffic problem. After 5 meetings of addressing high level questions, as in 'What do we want to accomplish from these meetings", we are finally getting our hands (or at least our feet) dirty.
We looked at several locations, from Holomua Road on the mauka side to Poni Road on the makai side, to get a good look at how the proposed road might intersect Baldwin Avenue. Some members, who lived near or have fond remembrances of the locations, had some heated feelings about the situation.
Luckily, one of the group members is also the owner of Ono Gelato Company, and lightened the mood by offering free gelato to all as we headed back to our meeting site to continue the debate- thanks Bill!

When we got back to our meeting hall, we got to debate the pros and cons of each location, and as you might guess, with a consequence as serious as this, no clear decisions were made in the next two hours.

Equally as challenging will be deciding the locations of where this road will start and stop, and how it will do so (traffic light, over pass, tunnel, levitation...).

The whole gist of this project is that we, members of the general public, who have now been trained in general traffic verbage, will make official recommendations to the Department of Transportation, who will then have to get ENvironmental Impact Surveys done, then there would be the matter of land acquisition, and then actual construction, (at least, this is what i have been lead to believe... i could be just making this up...) so we are looking at least ten years before Haiku-dwellers have a way home that doesn't entail going through historic and charming Paia town...
